WhatsApp Broadcasts vs Email for Customer Retention in India (2026): The Cost per Person Reached
WhatsApp bills every delivered message; email tools bill by contact or plan. On our published fees, that one difference decides which retention channel is cheaper at every list size, and where each one earns its cost.

On a 10,000-contact list with four campaigns a month, WhatsApp on our Rs.15,000 Managed Broadcasts plan costs Rs.54,350 to Rs.62,400 a month, about Rs.5.44 to Rs.6.24 per person, because Meta bills every delivered message. Email on our Rs.20,000 Nurture plan costs about Rs.2 per person plus the tool licence.
Key takeaways
- WhatsApp marketing messages are billed per delivery: about Rs.0.86 at Meta's India rate and Rs.0.95 to Rs.1.09 through a platform, so one broadcast to 10,000 people costs Rs.9,500 to Rs.10,900 every time it goes out.
- Email tools bill by contact count or plan, not by send, so a fifth campaign to the same list adds no tool cost within the plan's allowance. Zoho Campaigns is free up to 2,000 contacts.
- Per person each month, on our fees and four campaigns: WhatsApp Rs.11.98 to Rs.13.76 at 2,000 contacts and Rs.5.44 to Rs.6.24 at 10,000; email Rs.10.00 at 2,000 on Zoho Campaigns and Rs.2.00 plus the tool at 10,000.
- Utility messages flip the maths: an appointment or delivery reminder costs about Rs.0.115 on WhatsApp, Rs.1,150 for 10,000 at Meta's rate, and replies inside a customer's 24-hour window are free.
- Most retention programmes need both: WhatsApp for reminders, carts and time-bound offers, email for frequent content and large lists. Our two entry plans together are Rs.35,000 a month in fees.
A retention programme messages people who already bought from you, so the channel question is not about reach. It is about what each message costs and how often you can afford to send it. Our WhatsApp marketing service publishes a Managed Broadcasts plan at Rs.15,000 a month for 4 campaigns, with Meta's charges of about Rs.0.86 per delivered marketing message and platform resale of Rs.0.95 to Rs.1.09 billed at cost in your account. Our email marketing and CRM automation service publishes a Nurture plan at Rs.20,000 a month for 4 campaigns and one maintained flow, with the email tool paid by you. Same campaign count, different billing, and that is where the gap opens.
Why does WhatsApp cost more per person than email as a list grows?
Because WhatsApp charges per message and email charges per contact. Meta's pricing documentation charges businesses for each delivered message from business to user, at a rate set by category and market, and nothing for messages that are sent but not delivered or for messages users send you. So a WhatsApp campaign's cost rises in a straight line with the list. Email tools are priced the other way: our service page lists Zoho Campaigns free up to 2,000 contacts, Mailchimp from about Rs.770 to Rs.1,150 a month for small lists and Zoho Marketing Automation at roughly $19 to $59 per 1,000 contacts. None of them charges for the fourth send to the same person.

What does a month of retention messages cost per person on each channel?
The table runs both entry plans at three list sizes with four campaigns a month to the whole list. The WhatsApp column adds the Rs.15,000 fee, the platform fee and four messages per person at platform resale rates. The email column adds the Rs.20,000 fee and the tool, which is free on Zoho Campaigns at 2,000 contacts; above that we leave the licence as the page states it, in dollars per 1,000 contacts, rather than invent a rupee figure for a plan you have not chosen.
| Contacts | WhatsApp messages | WhatsApp total | WhatsApp per person | Email total | Email per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2,000 | 8,000 | Rs.23,950 to Rs.27,520 | Rs.11.98 to Rs.13.76 | Rs.20,000 (Zoho Campaigns free) | Rs.10.00 |
| 10,000 | 40,000 | Rs.54,350 to Rs.62,400 | Rs.5.44 to Rs.6.24 | Rs.20,000 plus tool ($190 to $590 on Zoho Marketing Automation) | Rs.2.00 plus tool |
| 20,000 | 80,000 | Rs.92,350 to Rs.1,06,000 | Rs.4.62 to Rs.5.30 | Rs.20,000 plus tool ($380 to $1,180 on Zoho Marketing Automation) | Rs.1.00 plus tool |
The 10,000-contact WhatsApp row matches the clinic example on our service page, about 40,000 marketing messages and roughly Rs.40,000 in Meta and platform charges a month. On fees the crossover sits low: a managed WhatsApp month costs less than the Rs.20,000 email plan only while the list is below roughly 275 to 960 contacts, depending on where the platform rates land. Above that, the email tool decides. Four WhatsApp messages cost Rs.3.80 to Rs.4.36 per contact a month at platform rates, so email stays cheaper as long as its licence costs less than that per contact. Zoho Campaigns' free tier and Mailchimp's small-list price sit well below it. The top of Zoho Marketing Automation's $19 to $59 per 1,000 range does not: $59 per 1,000 passes Rs.3.80 a contact at any exchange rate above about Rs.65 to the dollar, so price the tool before you assume email is cheaper. The month-one view of each bill, including setup, is in our WhatsApp marketing cost guide and our email and CRM automation cost guide.
Per person delivered is not per person reached
Neither of our pages publishes a read rate or an open rate, and we will not borrow one. To compare on readers, take your own numbers: divide the monthly cost per contact by the share of contacts who read at least one message that month. If WhatsApp reads several times as many of your customers as email does, the per-reader gap narrows or reverses. Measure it on your list for a month before you move budget.
How does send frequency change the WhatsApp vs email decision?
Frequency is where the billing difference bites hardest. On a 10,000-contact list each extra WhatsApp broadcast adds Rs.9,500 to Rs.10,900 in message charges, so moving from 4 to 8 campaigns a month adds Rs.38,000 to Rs.43,600 before any fee. An extra email to the same list adds nothing to a contact-priced tool bill within its send allowance. That is why email carries the frequent content, the newsletter, the new arrivals, the how-to, and WhatsApp carries the few messages a month that justify a rupee each.
| Campaigns a month | Our plan | WhatsApp messages and platform | WhatsApp total with fee | Email plan fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Managed Broadcasts / Nurture | Rs.39,350 to Rs.47,400 | Rs.54,350 to Rs.62,400 | Rs.20,000 plus tool |
| 8 | Managed Growth / Automate | Rs.77,350 to Rs.91,000 | Rs.1,07,350 to Rs.1,21,000 | Rs.40,000 plus tool |
The eight-campaign row uses our Rs.30,000 Managed Growth plan, which adds drip journeys, template A/B tests and abandoned-cart or appointment flows, and our Rs.40,000 Automate plan, which adds three lifecycle flows, segmentation, lead scoring and CRM administration. The fees rise by similar amounts; the message bill is what doubles. Our WhatsApp page also caps cadence at one marketing message a week per segment, so eight campaigns a month only works when they go to different segments, not the whole list twice a week.
When is WhatsApp the better retention channel?
- Reminders and confirmations. Appointment, delivery and renewal reminders are utility messages at about Rs.0.115 each, around an eighth of a marketing message: 10,000 reminders cost about Rs.1,150 at Meta's rate.
- Abandoned carts. Our page prices a utility message at 1 hour and a marketing message at 24 hours at about Rs.1 per shopper, a cost that only ever applies to people who nearly bought.
- Conversations. Replies inside a customer's 24-hour service window are free, so a broadcast that invites a reply turns into free follow-up the moment the customer answers.
- Small, high-value lists. Below roughly 1,000 contacts the two channels cost about the same to run with us, and a jeweller, clinic or developer with a few hundred past buyers gains little from email's lower per-send cost.
- Time-bound offers. A sale that ends tonight belongs on the channel the customer checks today; email suits offers that can wait to be found.
Clinics are the clearest case: our healthcare marketing page adds WhatsApp appointment automation at Rs.15,000 a month and calls reminders nearly free at about Rs.0.115 each, while a newsletter to the same patients costs nothing per send by email. If your number is new, the sending limits in the first month matter more than price; the tier-by-tier plan is in our WhatsApp Business API 30-day ramp.
When is email the better retention channel?
- Large lists. At 20,000 contacts our arithmetic puts email at Rs.1.00 per person in fees plus the tool, against Rs.4.62 to Rs.5.30 on WhatsApp, as long as the licence costs less than about Rs.3.80 a contact.
- Frequent content. Newsletters, catalogues, how-tos and long product stories need room and repetition, and email charges nothing extra per send.
- Lifecycle flows that run for months. Our email page sequences a welcome flow of 3 emails over 7 days, abandonment or nurture steps over 3 to 10 days, and win-back at 90 days of silence, then suppression at 180.
- B2B and considered purchases. A nurture sequence that touches a lead several times over weeks is affordable by email and expensive at a rupee a message.
- Contacts without a WhatsApp opt-in. WhatsApp broadcasts need explicit opt-in to the channel; many older customer records only carry an email address.
Email has rules of its own. Google's sender guidelines require bulk senders to authenticate with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, to support one-click unsubscribe on marketing mail and to keep the spam rate reported in Postmaster Tools below 0.3 percent. Our Nurture plan includes that deliverability work, which is why its first fortnight goes on records and list cleaning before any campaign is sent.
Should a business run WhatsApp and email together for retention?
Usually, once the list passes a few thousand contacts. Run separately, our two entry plans are Rs.35,000 a month in fees for 8 campaigns between them, plus the WhatsApp message bill and the email tool. Our Rs.75,000 Lifecycle plan runs email, WhatsApp and SMS from one automation platform with shared suppression rules, so a customer who replied on WhatsApp is not chased by email the same afternoon; it suits brands where the journeys, not the broadcasts, carry the revenue. For a store, the order we would suggest is abandoned-cart and order updates on WhatsApp first, then a weekly email, then win-back flows on both; the wider plan for stores is on our ecommerce marketing page.
| If this is true | Lead with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most messages are reminders or order updates | Utility messages cost about Rs.0.115 each | |
| You plan more than 4 sends a month to the same people | No per-send charge on contact-priced tools | |
| The list is under about 1,000 past buyers | Either; WhatsApp if replies matter | Monthly totals land near Rs.20,000 on both |
| The list is over 10,000 | Email for frequency, WhatsApp for a few high-value sends | Rs.2.00 plus tool against Rs.5.44 to Rs.6.24 per person a month |
| Journeys across channels drive revenue | Both, one platform | Lifecycle at Rs.75,000 shares suppression across email, WhatsApp and SMS |
Every fee above is on our published pricing page, and every message and tool charge is billed at cost in your own account. The per-person figures are our arithmetic from those prices, before GST, and assume every contact is messaged in every campaign. A segmented calendar that sends each customer fewer WhatsApp messages lowers that column directly, which is the strongest argument for segmenting before you compare channels at all.
Frequently asked questions
Is WhatsApp marketing more expensive than email marketing in India?
Per message, yes. Meta charges about Rs.0.86 for each delivered marketing message in India, Rs.0.95 to Rs.1.09 through a platform, while email tools charge by contact count or plan and nothing per send. On our fees and four campaigns a month, 10,000 contacts cost Rs.5.44 to Rs.6.24 per person on WhatsApp and about Rs.2 plus the tool licence on email.
At what list size does email become cheaper than WhatsApp?
On fees, very early. With our Rs.15,000 Managed Broadcasts plan, platform fees and four campaigns a month, a WhatsApp month stays under our Rs.20,000 email Nurture fee only below roughly 275 to 960 contacts. Above that, email is cheaper as long as the tool licence costs less than about Rs.3.80 per contact a month, which free and small-list tools do and the top of Zoho Marketing Automation's range does not.
How much does one WhatsApp broadcast to 10,000 customers cost?
About Rs.8,600 at Meta's India rate of roughly Rs.0.86 per delivered marketing message, or Rs.9,500 to Rs.10,900 at the Rs.0.95 to Rs.1.09 that platforms such as AiSensy, Interakt and Wati charge after markup. Only delivered messages are billed. The platform fee of Rs.1,350 to Rs.3,800 a month and any agency fee are on top, and GST applies.
Are WhatsApp reminders cheaper than marketing broadcasts?
Yes. Appointment, delivery and renewal reminders are utility messages, billed at about Rs.0.115 each in India, roughly an eighth of a marketing message, so 10,000 reminders cost about Rs.1,150 at Meta's rate. Replies inside a customer's 24-hour service window are free. That is why reminders and order updates are usually the first WhatsApp automations to pay for themselves.
Can one plan manage WhatsApp and email together?
Yes. Our Lifecycle plan at Rs.75,000 a month runs email, WhatsApp and SMS from one automation platform with shared suppression rules, six or more flows and RFM segmentation, with tools and message charges paid in your account. Smaller programmes can combine Managed Broadcasts at Rs.15,000 and email Nurture at Rs.20,000, Rs.35,000 a month in fees, run as two calendars.
