E-commerce Website Cost in India (2026): What ₹3,00,000 Buys and When Shopify Is Cheaper
Store builds are the one tier on our price list that says "from" instead of a fixed number. Here is why, what the ₹3,00,000 floor includes, and the revenue line where a custom store stops making sense.

An e-commerce website in India costs from ₹3,00,000 at Mediaverse Digital's published rates, about $6,000, scoped to your catalogue and payment integrations, GST extra. Shopify is the cheaper default for most D2C brands below roughly ₹50 lakh in monthly revenue; a custom storefront pays off above that line or when speed and app fees justify it.
Key takeaways
- The published floor for an e-commerce or custom build is ₹3,00,000, about $6,000, which is ₹3,54,000 with 18 percent GST. It is the only tier on our price list that says "from", because catalogue size and integrations set the scope.
- The ₹3,00,000 floor includes ecommerce or custom features, payment gateway integration, product and catalogue architecture, performance at scale, a dedicated project manager and a timeline scoped upfront, typically 6 to 12 weeks.
- Shopify is the right default for most D2C brands. A custom storefront makes sense above roughly ₹50 lakh in monthly revenue, or when site speed, custom experiences or app-fee costs justify it. We build both and recommend the cheaper one.
- Four costs sit outside every build quote: the payment gateway's per-transaction fee, the platform subscription and apps if you use Shopify, the ad budget paid directly to Meta, and GST.
- A six-month store launch with Meta ads at published rates is ₹4,50,000 in fees before GST (₹3,00,000 build plus ₹25,000 a month of ads management) plus the ad budget you choose; at ₹1,00,000 a month that is ₹10,50,000 all in.
Every other line on our pricing page is a fixed number: ₹60,000 for a Starter site, ₹1,50,000 for a Growth site, ₹25,000 a month for Meta ads. The store tier is the exception. It says "from ₹3,00,000", and buyers rightly ask what the word "from" is hiding. The answer is that an online store is priced by its catalogue and its integrations, not by its page count, and no honest agency can fix that number before it knows how many products you sell, how you ship them and what has to talk to what. This guide sets out what the ₹3,00,000 floor includes, when a Shopify store is the cheaper answer, which costs sit outside any build quote, and what a six-month launch costs at published rates, in the same numbers we quote D2C brands every week.
How much does an e-commerce website cost in India in 2026?
Four options cover almost every brand, and only one of them is a store in the strict sense. The other three are worth listing because a surprising number of businesses that ask for an e-commerce site actually need a website that takes orders on WhatsApp, which is a fifth of the price.
| Option | Published price | What you get | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted store builder (Shopify and similar) | Monthly subscription plus app fees, published by the platform and revised by it | Reliable checkout, themes, a large app ecosystem, fast launch | Most D2C brands below roughly ₹50 lakh a month in revenue |
| Starter site, no cart | ₹60,000 one time (₹70,800 with GST) | Up to 8 custom pages, conversion copy, on-page SEO and schema, contact and WhatsApp lead capture, analytics, 3 to 4 weeks | A short catalogue sold by enquiry or WhatsApp order, no online payment |
| Growth site, no cart | ₹1,50,000 one time (₹1,77,000 with GST) | Up to 20 pages plus blog and CMS, keyword plan, AI-search optimisation, A/B-testable landing pages, 4 to 6 weeks | A content-led brand that sells through enquiry or a marketplace and wants organic traffic |
| Ecommerce or custom build | From ₹3,00,000, about $6,000 (from ₹3,54,000 with GST), scoped | Store or custom application, payment gateway, catalogue architecture, performance at scale, dedicated project manager, 6 to 12 weeks | Online payment and checkout on your own domain, above the Shopify line or with needs Shopify cannot meet |
The two middle rows matter more than they look. A brand with 8 products and a WhatsApp order flow does not need a cart, a gateway or a catalogue architecture, and paying ₹3,00,000 for them is the most common overspend we see in store briefs. Our website design cost guide sets the market bands those tiers sit inside; this post is about the top row and the bottom row, the two ways to actually take money online.
What does the ₹3,00,000 floor actually include?
The tier is listed on the website design page with six lines, and every one of them is a deliverable that goes into the written scope before work starts:
- Ecommerce or custom features: the cart, checkout, accounts, order management and whatever your model needs beyond a brochure site, built on Next.js to the same 90-plus PageSpeed target as every site we ship.
- Payment gateway integration: the gateway of your choice wired to checkout and tested end to end, with the gateway account registered in your name.
- Product and catalogue architecture: how products, variants, categories and filters are structured, which is the part that decides whether the store still works at 500 products, and the part template stores get wrong.
- Performance at scale: sub-2-second product pages and a checkout that holds up on a sale day, which is the reason a custom build exists at all.
- A dedicated project manager, a single person who owns the timeline and the scope document.
- A timeline scoped upfront, typically 6 to 12 weeks depending on catalogue size and integrations, with the same 48-hour written quote after the discovery call and the same 30 days of post-launch fixes as every other tier.
What moves the number above the floor is not design, it is plumbing: the count of products and variants to migrate, the number of systems the store must talk to (an ERP, a courier aggregator, a loyalty tool, a marketplace feed), and any feature that does not exist off the shelf, such as a configurator or a subscription model. A 40-product store with one gateway and one courier sits at the floor. A 2,000-SKU store with ERP sync and three shipping rules does not, and the scope document will say by how much before you sign.
Shopify or a custom store: which is cheaper for your revenue?
For most D2C brands, Shopify, and we say so on our ecommerce industry page: it is fast to launch, the checkout is reliable, and the app ecosystem covers most needs. The line we use is roughly ₹50 lakh in monthly revenue. Below it, the subscription and app fees are a small share of sales and the speed of launch is worth more than a custom build. Above it, three things start to justify a custom Next.js storefront: page speed you control end to end, experiences the theme cannot express, and app fees that have grown into a real monthly line. We build both and will recommend the cheaper option when it fits, because a brand that outgrows Shopify in year three is a better client than one that overbought in year one.
| Signal | Hosted store (Shopify and similar) | Custom build from ₹3,00,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly revenue | Below roughly ₹50 lakh | Above roughly ₹50 lakh, or heading there inside a year |
| How you pay for the platform | Subscription plus per-app fees every month, set by the platform | One-time build, then hosting in your own account |
| Time to first sale | Days to a few weeks | 6 to 12 weeks, scoped upfront |
| Page speed and custom experiences | Within what the theme and apps allow | Built to the 90-plus PageSpeed target, no theme limits |
| Integrations | Whatever an app exists for | Whatever the scope document specifies, including systems with no app |
| Who owns what | Your store data, on a platform you rent | Code, domain, hosting and every account registered in your name |
What costs sit outside the build quote?
Every store build quote we issue is fixed, and every one of them leaves four costs out, because they are paid to someone else or set by someone else. Budget for them separately, whichever route you take.
| Cost | Who sets it | Custom build | Hosted store |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment gateway fee | The gateway, per transaction, on its own published pricing page | Paid to the gateway from your own account | Paid to the gateway, and on some plans a platform transaction fee on top |
| Platform subscription and apps | The platform, monthly | None; hosting runs in your own account | Monthly subscription plus each app you add |
| Ad budget | You, paid directly to Meta or Google | Never routed through us; management is ₹25,000 a month on the Launch plan | Same |
| GST | Government, 18 percent on our fees | From ₹3,54,000 landed on the ₹3,00,000 floor | Charged by the platform on its fees |
What does the first six months cost with ads?
A store without traffic is a warehouse with a nicer door, so the honest launch budget includes the ads. At published rates, Meta ads management is ₹25,000 a month on the Launch plan for ad budgets up to ₹1,50,000 a month, with pixel and Conversions API setup, a full-funnel build and 6 new creatives a month, live within 7 working days. The Growth plan at ₹50,000 a month adds catalogue and Advantage+ shopping campaigns, 12 or more creatives and landing page CRO audits for budgets up to ₹5,00,000 a month. The table costs six months on Launch with a ₹1,00,000 monthly ad budget, which is inside the plan's cap and a realistic first-year number for a brand that intends to sell online rather than merely exist online. Every fee is before GST; the ad budget goes from you to Meta.
| Line item | Custom build route | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Store build | ₹3,00,000 | The floor; scope may take it higher |
| Meta ads management, 6 months on Launch | ₹1,50,000 | ₹25,000 a month, month to month |
| Fees to Mediaverse Digital | ₹4,50,000 | Plus 18 percent GST: ₹5,31,000 |
| Ad budget, 6 months at ₹1,00,000 | ₹6,00,000 | Paid directly to Meta from your ad account |
| Six-month total | ₹10,50,000 | Before GST on fees |
| Optional: SEO and AI search, Foundations | ₹2,40,000 | ₹40,000 a month, 3-month minimum, for buying-intent content |
The ROAS the ad budget needs depends on your gross margin, not on an industry average. The rule we set out on the ecommerce page is that a brand with 70 percent margins can profit at 2.5x ROAS while a 30 percent-margin brand may need 4x or better. On a ₹1,00,000 month that is ₹2,50,000 of revenue at 2.5x and ₹4,00,000 at 4x, before any of it is attributed to the store itself. We work that target backwards from contribution margin in the first strategy session, before a campaign launches.
How long does an e-commerce build take?
Six to twelve weeks, scoped upfront, against 3 to 4 weeks for a Starter site and 4 to 6 for a Growth site. The sequence is the same as every build: a 30-minute discovery call, a written scope and fixed quote within 48 hours, sitemap and design approved before anything is coded, then build, content and integrations in parallel, then launch, tracking verification and team training with 30 days of post-launch fixes. The store-specific weeks go to catalogue migration, gateway testing and courier or ERP integration, which is why the number is a range and why a clean product sheet on day one is the single biggest thing a brand can do to land at the short end. If you already have a store and are weighing a rebuild, our redesign cost guide explains why the tiers are the same either way.
What we do not publish
A fixed e-commerce price above the ₹3,00,000 floor, because the scope sets it and we would rather write it down for your catalogue than guess for everyone's. A conversion-rate or ROAS benchmark, because the honest number depends on your margin, your offer and your ads. And any gateway or platform fee, because those are set by Razorpay, PayU, Shopify and their peers on their own pricing pages, which change without asking us. What we do put in writing: the deliverables, the timeline, the fixed quote, and every account in your name.
Which should a D2C brand buy first?
Answer three questions in order. Do you need online payment on your own domain? If no, the Starter site at ₹60,000 with WhatsApp ordering is the right buy and this whole post is premature. Are you below roughly ₹50 lakh a month? If yes, launch on a hosted store, spend the difference on ads, and revisit the custom build when the platform fees or the speed ceiling start to cost you sales. Are you above that line, or do you need something no app provides? Then the custom build from ₹3,00,000 is the one that pays for itself, and the scope call is where the real number is fixed. Whichever route you choose, the ads need a page built for them; our landing page versus full website guide covers that decision, and the AI search page covers the buying-intent content that brings the shopper to your store before the marketplace does.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the e-commerce tier say "from ₹3,00,000" instead of a fixed price?
Because a store is priced by its catalogue and its integrations rather than its page count, and those are unknown until the discovery call. Every other tier on our pricing page is a fixed number; the store tier carries a floor and a promise: a written scope and fixed quote within 48 hours of the call. A 40-product store with one gateway and one courier sits at the floor. A 2,000-SKU store with ERP sync does not, and the scope document says by how much before you sign.
Is Shopify cheaper than a custom e-commerce website in India?
For most D2C brands below roughly ₹50 lakh in monthly revenue, yes. A hosted store trades a one-time build for a monthly subscription plus app fees set by the platform, and at that revenue those fees are a small share of sales while the speed of launch is worth more than a custom build. Above that line, or when speed, custom experiences or app fees start costing sales, the custom build from ₹3,00,000 becomes the cheaper option over time. We build both and recommend whichever is cheaper for you.
What is included in the ₹3,00,000 e-commerce website price?
The six lines on the published tier: ecommerce or custom features, payment gateway integration, product and catalogue architecture, performance at scale, a dedicated project manager, and a timeline scoped upfront, typically 6 to 12 weeks. As with every tier, the code, domain, hosting and every account are registered in your name, tracking is configured and verified at launch, and 30 days of post-launch fixes are included. GST at 18 percent is extra, taking the floor to ₹3,54,000.
What costs are not included in an e-commerce website quote?
Four. The payment gateway's per-transaction fee, which the gateway publishes and charges to your account. The platform subscription and app fees if you choose a hosted store rather than a custom build. The ad budget, which you pay directly to Meta or Google; our management fee starts at ₹25,000 a month. And GST at 18 percent on our fees. None of these are hidden, but none of them are ours to fix, so they are listed in the scope document as yours.
How long does it take to build an e-commerce website?
Six to twelve weeks from the day the scope is signed, against 3 to 4 weeks for a Starter site. The range comes from catalogue migration, gateway testing and any courier, ERP or marketplace integration, which is why the timeline is scoped upfront rather than promised. A clean product sheet with images, variants and prices on day one is the single biggest thing a brand can do to land at the short end. Meta ads can be set up in parallel and are live within 7 working days once the store is ready to receive them.
Can I start with a cheaper website and add e-commerce later?
Yes, and for a short catalogue it is often the right sequence. A Starter site at ₹60,000 with WhatsApp order capture takes enquiries and orders without a cart or a gateway, and a Growth site at ₹1,50,000 adds the CMS and keyword plan for organic traffic. When the order volume justifies online payment, the store is scoped from ₹3,00,000 on the same tiers, and the pages, content and rankings you have built carry over rather than starting again.
