How to Track Which Leads Your Website and Google Business Profile Actually Produced

Most local businesses can name their monthly marketing spend to the rupee and cannot name where a single lead came from. Here is the setup that fixes it, using tools that cost nothing.

Tag your Google Business Profile website link with UTM parameters, add a required source question to every form, and read calls, messages and direction requests in the profile performance report. Do it before you start spending: a Mediaverse Digital build includes analytics and lead alerts, and launches in 3 to 4 weeks.

Key takeaways

  • Google Business Profile and your website generate different leads and record them in different places. Calls, messages and direction requests from the listing never reach your website analytics at all.
  • One UTM-tagged website link on the listing is the highest-value fifteen minute job in local marketing. Untagged, every visitor the listing sends lands in analytics as ordinary Google traffic.
  • A required "how did you hear about us" field on every form costs nothing and catches what no tracking can see: walk-ins, referrals, WhatsApp forwards and word of mouth.
  • Attribution has to exist before the spend, not after it. Meta ads management at Rs.25,000 a month plus SEO at Rs.40,000 is Rs.7,80,000 a year in fees alone, before any ad budget.
  • Mediaverse Digital builds from Rs.60,000 include analytics, lead alerts and WhatsApp lead capture inside the 3 to 4 week starter scope, so the tracking ships with the site instead of becoming a later project.

Meta ads management at Rs.25,000 a month and SEO at Rs.40,000 a month is Rs.7,80,000 a year in fees, before a single rupee of ad budget and before 18% GST. Those are our own published prices. The question that decides whether that money gets repeated next year, which channel actually produced the leads, has a free answer that takes about an hour to set up, and most local businesses never set it up at all.

Why can your website analytics not see your Google Business Profile leads?

Because most of those leads never touch your website. Someone searches for a dentist near them, sees your listing, taps the call button, and books an appointment without ever loading a page you own. That lead is real, it is countable, and it is counted by Google inside the Business Profile performance report rather than by your analytics. The one action that does reach your site, a tap on the listing website button, arrives with no label on it and gets filed as ordinary Google organic traffic unless you put a label there yourself.

WhatsApp tap on your websiteNowhere, by defaultFire a click event on the WhatsApp button
Walk-in who saw a hoarding or an autoNowhere, everAsk at the counter and log the answer

Read that table as two separate ledgers that never reconcile themselves. The listing keeps one, your site keeps the other, and nobody merges them for you. Our Map Pack and website guide covers how to get found in both places. This one is about telling the two apart afterwards.

This is the fifteen minute job. UTM parameters are just text appended to your web address that your analytics reads as a label. Build the link once, paste it into the listing, and every visitor the listing sends is separated from your other Google traffic from that day onward.

  1. Open Google Campaign URL Builder, or write the parameters by hand if you prefer.
  2. Website URL: your home page, or better, the page the listing should actually land on.
  3. Campaign source: google. Campaign medium: organic. Campaign name: gbp, or the branch name if you run more than one location.
  4. Copy the finished link. It will look like your address followed by a question mark and three utm_ parameters.
  5. In your Business Profile, edit the profile, open the website field, replace the plain address with the tagged one, and save.
  6. Wait a week, then open your analytics and filter traffic by that campaign name. Everything in that bucket came from the listing.

Run one location per campaign name

If you have three branches, give each listing its own campaign name rather than one shared label. It costs nothing extra and it is the only way to see which branch listing is doing the work, which matters the moment you decide where to spend next.

What should every lead form on your site ask?

Analytics tells you the last click. It does not tell you about the hoarding, the auto rickshaw, the friend who recommended you or the WhatsApp forward that started the whole thing. One required field closes most of that gap, and unlike everything else on this page it also works for the leads that walk through the door.

  • A required "how did you hear about us" field with five or six real options, not a free text box that everyone leaves blank.
  • Options that match what you actually run: Google search, Google Maps, Instagram or Facebook, a friend or existing customer, an auto or hoarding you saw, walked past the shop.
  • The page the form sat on, captured as a hidden field, so you know whether the pricing page or the home page did the persuading.
  • A timestamp, which your form tool already records, so you can line up spikes against the week an ad campaign or a van route ran.
  • The same question asked out loud at the counter and typed into the same sheet, because offline answers belong in the same ledger as online ones.

Every starter build we ship from Rs.60,000 already includes contact and WhatsApp lead capture, analytics and lead alerts inside a 3 to 4 week timeline, so on our website builds the source field is a scoping decision rather than a change request. If your site is already live, it is still a twenty minute edit on most form tools.

How do you count phone calls, which are still most local leads?

Calls are where local attribution usually collapses, because a phone ringing leaves no trace in any dashboard. There are three honest ways to handle it, in increasing order of effort.

  • Read the calls metric in your Business Profile performance report every month and log it. It covers only calls that started from the listing, but that is exactly the number you cannot get anywhere else.
  • Make every phone number on your website a tel: link and fire a click event on it. A tap is not proof of a completed call, so treat it as an upper bound and label it that way in your sheet.
  • Use a separate tracking number for one channel at a time, printed only there. This is the only method that attributes a call with certainty, and it is worth doing for a paid campaign rather than for everything.

For a business whose leads mostly arrive by phone, the listing number and the website number doing different jobs is the cleanest split available without buying anything. That is the pattern we set up for the clinics, salons and coaching centres on our local business page.

What does this cost and when should you do it?

The tracking itself costs nothing. The Business Profile performance report, the URL builder and the analytics property are all free, and the form field is a checkbox in whatever tool already sends you the enquiry. The cost is entirely in the timing. Turn it on before the spend starts, not after: Meta ads management begins at Rs.25,000 a month plus your own ad budget, and a campaign that runs for six months with no attribution in place produces Rs.1,50,000 of fees and no evidence about whether to renew.

What can this setup honestly not tell you?

Four things, and it is better to know them now than to argue with the dashboard later. First, Business Profile data is aggregated counts, not a list of people: you learn that thirty one calls came from the listing, never who they were. Second, a UTM tag records the last click, so a customer who found you on Maps in March and searched your brand name in May is credited to May. Third, none of this proves a lead became a customer, which only your own follow-up log can do. Fourth, offline formats leave no digital trace at all.

We do not publish conversion benchmarks, and you should distrust anyone who does

You will find agencies quoting a standard conversion rate or a normal cost per lead for your industry. We publish our prices and not those numbers, because a benchmark drawn from other businesses in other cities tells you nothing reliable about yours. Your own first ninety days of tracked leads is the only benchmark worth planning against.

Set it up, run it for a quarter, then read it. At that point you can decide what to renew and what to cut using your own numbers, which is the entire point, and you can size the next quarter honestly against our monthly budget guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do UTM parameters on my Google Business Profile hurt my local SEO?

No. UTM parameters are read by your analytics and ignored by ranking systems, and the link still points at the same page on the same domain. What matters for local ranking is that the address is correct, live and consistent with the rest of your listings. Point the tagged link at a real page that returns normally, and nothing about your Map Pack position changes.

Where do I see calls that came from my Google Business Profile?

Inside the profile itself, in the performance report, which counts calls, messages, direction requests, website clicks and the searches that surfaced you. It is a separate dashboard from your website analytics and the two never merge on their own, so the practical habit is to open it on the same day each month and copy the numbers into whatever sheet holds your website leads.

Is a click on a phone number the same as a phone call?

No, and treating it as one will flatter your reporting. A tap on a tel: link means someone opened the dialler. They may not have pressed call, the call may not have connected, and on desktop the click does nothing useful at all. Record click events as an upper bound, label the column that way, and use a dedicated tracking number when a campaign genuinely needs certainty.

What if most of my customers just walk in?

Then the counter question is your main tracking tool and it should be asked every time. A one line log of what each walk-in says, typed into the same sheet as your online leads, is worth more than any dashboard for that business. Direction requests in your Business Profile performance report are the closest digital proxy for foot traffic, so log those alongside it.

How long before this tracking is worth reading?

Give it a full quarter before drawing conclusions. A week of data is mostly noise, a month is one seasonal slice, and three months covers enough variation to show which source is steady and which was a one-off. Set it up on day one anyway, because the tracking cannot be applied retrospectively: leads that arrived before the tag went live are simply unattributed forever.
